Worthing Raiders v Bury St Edmunds RUFC
2nd March 2019 Kick off 3 pm
Bury St Edmunds RUFC (‘The Wolfpack’) are our visitors this Saturday, travelling down from Suffolk for their fourth visit to Roundstone Lane for a National League 2S fixture. Raiders visited the Greene King IPA Haberden facility in Bury St Edmunds last November and returned to the South Coast victorious 22-36.
History & Background stuff
The club was founded in 1925 as Bury & West Suffolk RFC. Post war players used to gather and practice at Culford School. By 1963 the Club regularly fielded 4 teams from its new home, at the ‘Haberden’, with 3 pitches and a small clubhouse.
During the 1970s the Club rebuilt its playing facilities and raised funds to build a larger clubhouse, further extended in the late 1980s.
In 2006, with the aid of a grant from the RFU, the club added a state-of-the-art ‘All Weather Pitch’ to the facilities. In recent times a stand has been added. Youth and Mini rugby is strongly supported.
The club presently turns out 4 senior sides with junior, youth and girls rugby taking over on Sundays. The Ladies team, Bury Foxes, play in NC East 1.
Bury St Edmunds, like Worthing, are a Community Rugby Club.
Club Colours: Green and Gold shirts and stockings, dark shorts
Emblem: Howling Wolf.
The Darkest day in the club’s history…..3rd March 1974.
Tragically, 18 members of the club were amongst the 345 passengers and crew who lost their lives in the Paris air crash. They were returning from a trip to the capital having enjoyed watching the International match. Members of Worthing RFC were also affected by this disaster as one of our former players, Bill Dack, was aboard the ill- fated plane.
Bury St Edmunds playing/league history
The Club was promoted into the London leagues (L8) in 2001, with success in the Suffolk cup following in 2004. In 2007 the club gained promotion to London Division 2 (L7) with the Colts XV winning the National plate. Season 2012/13 saw the club win London 1 (L6) as Champions. In 2014-5 season Bury celebrated promotion to National 2S beating off Barnes by 7 points.

Raiders travelled to Suffolk for the 10th fixture of the campaign looking for a good start against a strong Bury line-up. This was delivered in spades, with 3 tries within the first 12 minutes all converted, a dream start (0-21). The home side pulled back a couple of scores, but Raiders added another try just before oranges to take a 12-26 lead into the break. A score for the home team after 56 minutes threatened a possible come-back, but 2 tries in 2 minutes from the lively John Dawe (17-36) secured the win. Bury grabbed a try near the end to rescue a bonus point.

Last season W14 /L16….78 points… 8th….. (1 spot and 3 points behind Raiders)
Another middling season, with 8 of the wins coming on home turf. Double achieved over LIWG, Broadstreet, Barnstaple and Canterbury. The highlight was probably the performances against the promoted sides:
Chinnor (36-37) & (28-27), both lost in the last few minutes
Cinderford (45-29 4tbp) & (19-24 losing bp).
Yasin Browne, Will Scholes and Sam Bixby led the way with 27 appearances.
The season so far…. P23 /W9 /D2….8th….54 points (Raiders 10th 48 points)
Since Raiders’ visit they have recorded wins on the road at B&S (17-33), LIWG (5-26) and Guernsey (19-27), on home turf Old A’s (24-22) and Old Reds (57-7). The drawn matches were at Redruth (20-20) and Barnes (24-24). In their last fixture they almost defeated Taunton Titans only to lose to a Gary Kingdom penalty in the dying minutes (22-24). (Heard that before!)
Last November Bury appointed a new head coach, Cardiff based Nick Wakley, who was previously involved with Welsh RFU as head coach with the Ladies 7s’ team. He also coaches Samurai 7s.
The team and replacements used against Taunton along with detail on some of the other players used so far is provided together with a little more information as to their credentials.
The new Coach has introduced a few new players to the fold including Anton Limlei, Mike Stanway, Toby Francombe, Jack Harvey and Ollie Walker. Jacob Bodkin has returned after missing last season.
Tui Uru (Back Row), 36 appearances, will be joining Northampton Saints Academy next season.
Once again an important fixture for Raiders against a side who like to play open entertaining rugby. It has all the hallmarks of another nail-biter, your touchline support cannot be understated, now we are entering the business end of the season!!
Please try to get along to add your encouragement to the boys, it is really appreciated…………
