This weekend Raiders welcomed Broadstreet for their first visit to the Rugby Park.
Raiders had Jack Forrest and Kemp Price returning to the starting line up with Pete Cleveland and Tom Adams among the replacements. In the absence of Liam Perkins, Matt Mclean was captain for the day.
Despite the poor weather and televised internationals a crowd of just over 400 were at the Rugby Park to support the National 2 South fixture.
Raiders kicked off attacking the southern end of the ground and were quickly on the attack. The home side soon showed their intention to play a fast open game and after a good break from Matt McLean the ball bobbled off a defender and over the visitors’ try line, Kemp Price was, as ever on the spot to touch down for the first points of the afternoon. Matt McLean added the extras, 7-0 Raiders.
Broadstreet had a chance to get on the scoreboard with a penalty attempt but unfortunately for them it went wide.
Raiders’ second try came a few minutes later. Matt McLean collected a high kick under great pressure, from the ruck the ball went from Kieran Leeming to Kemp Price on his inside then to Jamie Redmayne and finally to Sam Hampson who dived in at the corner to round off a fine piece of attacking rugby. Matt’s conversion attempt from the touch line just missed. 12-0 to the home side after thirteen minutes.
Although it was Raiders that had most of the play over the next fifteen minutes it was the visitors that scored the next try which they converted to bring the score to 12-7 after thirty minutes.
Raiders continued to move the ball around the pitch through slick handling and strong running resulting in a second try for Sam Hampson in the left corner. Matt’s conversion flew straight and true to extend the lead to 17-7.
A further penalty by Matt McLean shortly before halftime was just reward for the pressure exerted by the home team.
Half time Raiders 22-7 Broadstreet.
In recent weeks the start of the second half has not been good for Raiders and so this was an area they looked to improve upon. Broadstreet restarted the game and pleasingly the home side controlled the ball and but for a poor final pass Jack Maslen would have scored within the first couple of minutes.
The game became a bit scrappy over the next ten minutes with neither side holding on to the ball for long. There were many scrums and the visitors made use of their powerful pack to gain the ascendency during this period.
It was while Broadstreet were having a good attacking spell that Jack Maslen intercepted a pass in Raiders’ territory and raced sixty metres to score the bonus point try. The lead now extended to 27-7.
The visitors continued to pressure the Raiders’ defence and eventually were rewarded with a converted try. The lead reduced to 27-14.
The final fifteen minutes of the game were dominated by the home side who continued to create scoring opportunities with entertaining rugby. Kiba Richards influence on the game in this period was outstanding, with two great tackles creating turnover ball and a breath taking sixty metre run brushing aside the would be tacklers.
With ten minutes to go Matt McLean hit a long penalty shot to extend the lead further to 30-14. Jack Forrest scored the fifth Raiders’ try when he kicked ahead and out ran the defence to get the touch down. With the conversion the score was now 37-14.
The final score for the home side came from a catch and drive resulting in Will Grief getting the touch down.
This bonus point win taking the Raiders up to 10th in the league.
