We sadly learnt at the end of last week, that former Club member, Mike Sanders had passed away during the week, unrelated to the current Corona Virus pandemic.
A number of our older members will have fond memories of Mike, who joined the Club, in the 1970s when he started to work for Datsun (as it then was).
He became a regional Director at Datsun before starting his own motor business in West Sussex prior to moving to Edinburgh.
Mike was a great club member and his involvements included Under 19s coach for 4 years and Chairman of Selectors in the early ‘80s. He was also a Joint Tour Manager of the club’s Tours to Toronto in 1980 and the Bahamas in 1982 and during ensuing years, was a regular member of the non-playing tours to Dublin and Paris.
On moving to Scotland in the late 1980’s, Mike became a member of Edinburgh Northern Rugby Club, where he was President for a number of years. Indeed, former Scottish International, Scott Hastings refers to him as ‘Mr Northern!’
His enthusiasm for Worthing Rugby Club continued to the end. Only very recently he was in touch regarding the Club’s Centenary Celebrations; he and his wife Pat, were planning to join us in September.
Mike will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Pat and the twins Katie and Emma at this sad time.
