Worthing Raiders v Barnes RFC
7th March 2020
Kick Off 3pm
Our visitors this Saturday are our old friends and rivals, Barnes RFC who travel all the way from SW13 to pay their sixth visit to Roundstone Lane for a National 2(S) fixture. They have, of course, visited on a number of occasions including fixtures in London & SE league days. Raiders visited Barn Elms for the away leg last November and returned victors by the narrowest of margins (31-32).
History & Background stuff
Barnes is a club rich in history, although there is uncertainty and debate as to when the club was founded. There was apparently a Barnes team in the 1870s, a letter in the Harlequins archive seeks player availability for a match against Barnes, available players to congregate at the Windsor Castle (a pub), White Hart Lane in Barnes. Additionally, fixtures in the 1890s are recorded in the Surrey Comet newspaper. Indeed, there are claims that the earliest recorded match, in 1862, against Richmond, was played at Barn Elms. Clear records show that in 1912 Harrodian RFC (Harrods store) was established and in 1978 the regeneration of Barnes RFC occurred as Harrodian ‘Vets’ XV was named Barnes. In 1990/91 the club started the season with no ground or clubhouse after the Harrods store was sold. The clubhouse and ground at Lonsdale Road (where Harrodians played) was sold and turned into a school. After a big effort from all at the club a decision was made to train and play at Barn Elms. Members donated to achieve this.
The club now run 3 or 4 senior sides most Saturdays, with a strong junior and mini section. The ladies team play in London SE 3.
Club Colours: Green & Gold. Club Emblem: Red Rose.
Barnes league history
When the leagues started in 1987, Harrodian were placed in Surrey 3, but by the mid-Nineties, the club, now known as Barnes, climbed out of the Surrey leagues. Eventually National league status was achieved in 2009, after a play-off match against Bracknell. They were relegated but bounced straight back only to face a similar outcome the following season. Promotion was again achieved in 2014/5 with a play-off win at Exmouth (22-27). This time they lasted 2 seasons before relegation. Once more they bounced straight back, as Champions.

Raiders travelled buoyed by the win at Clifton a couple of weeks previously, coupled with a fine (and first in recent times) win over Esher at ‘The Lane’ last time out. They certainly opened meaning business, 0-12 with under 10 minutes played. Barnes edged back into the game and took the lead shortly after half time with the bonus point try (26-22). With 15 minutes left Raiders were again in front, but memories of the match last season came flooding back as Barnes scored at the death, with the conversion to take the spoils. In fairness the kick was a difficult one, which just shaved the up-right for Raiders to win by a point!! (Match points 2-5) The win left Raiders in 11th spot with 26 points but introduced a little daylight into the lead over 12th placed Barnes on 16 points.

Last Season P30 W12 D1 66 points …11th Raiders 9th 68 points
As a promoted team the main objective was to avoid relegation as over the years they have created a bit of a reputation to yo-yo! They succeeded and in fact were safe with a couple of matches still to play. In truth, like Raiders, there were possibly a few nervous weeks, but in the end finished well clear (16 points) of the zone. Including the double over Raiders, they also achieved this feat against Dings and LIWG. In their collection of wins TJs (20-21), Redruth (20-22) and the magnificent display at Barn Elms against Titan (51-38) stand-out. The draw was against Bury St Edmunds (24-24). Josh Hammett was top points scorer with 114, whilst Robbie Martey ran in 14 tries in his 29 appearances.
Ciaran Smyth made 28 appearances, with Scrum-half Josh Davies on 26.
The season so far…. P23 W7 12th 41 points (Raiders 11th 55 points)
Barnes have soldiered on this season and are 15 points clear of Sutton & Epsom who presently occupy 14th spot, 6 points clear of Westcliff in 13th. After Raiders, they have the re-arranged match at Bournemouth and then a visit from high-flying Hawks followed by a trip to table-topping TJs. April sees a visit from Old Albanian, followed after Easter by a trip to Westcliff. Clifton at Barn Elms sees out the season. Maybe a few twists and turns to come! Of their results so far, wins on the road against Redruth (10-12), Old Albanian (24-26) and Bury St Edmunds (34-36) stand-out. Scrum-half Josh Davies has featured in all fixtures, although the front row of Hunter, Ruddock and McArthur have only missed a few between them.
As usual details of the team and replacements used in the defeat against Taunton (10-45) are provided, along with notes on a few other players who have featured in recent fixtures. (The match against Titans was played at Rosslyn Park, on the all-weather pitch as Barn Elms was waterlogged). Since the first leg, the side has chopped and changed, but there are still quite a few players still in the squad who played in November. In addition, Tom O’Toole (full-back/fly-half), who was reported as retired, has returned to the ranks in recent fixtures. Sokonaia Kalou a former Fiji international (2010-12 13 apps) has found his way to Barn Elms and has playing in the boiler house. Harvey Scott has been on the open side since moving from Blackheath earlier in the season, he has also represented Cardiff Met. Ex-Raider and Quins Academy player Kieran Sassone has played a few games but has not been in action for Barnes since 1st February. In the match last Saturday against Titans, full-back Myles Rawston-Rudd received a red card after 15 minutes for a tip tackle.
Once again this fixture has all the makings of another close encounter, the boys must be chomping on the bit for action after last week’s match at Esher was postponed, so please try and get along to add your support from the touchline or the balcony. Both teams are renowned for attractive running rugby, so the fixture has all the hallmarks for an outstanding, entertaining match.
So……Come down to ‘The Lane’ to cheer the boys along for another 5 pointers!!
